The International Vacuum Congress is the major triennial meeting of IUVSTA that was first held in Namur, Belgium, in 1958. This year IVC-21 will be held in Malmӧ, Sweden between July 1-5. This meeting has never been held in Australia, nor in the Southern Hemisphere.
Only member vacuum societies of IUVSTA are allowed to bid for an IVC. The VSA in the 1990’s bid twice to hold an IVC in Australia. We believe the local and regional community will benefit from such a prestigious congress being held here on our shores and given our success with hosting VASSCAA-9 last year, the regional IUVSTA conference, it is time for us to bid again.
Professor Simon Ringer (University of Sydney) and Dr Anton P.J. Stampfl (VSA President) are co-Chairs of the VSA bid. Professor Ringer brings a wealth of experience in the organisation of highly successful international conferences. For example ICM19, the 19th International Microscopy Congress was extremely successful and seamlessly executed. Professor Ringer is a microscopist, with particular focus on field-ion and atom-probe microscopy, with therefore much overlap in the types of research carried out in Vacuum Science and Technology, making Professor Ringer an ideal Chair for IVC-23. Dr Stampfl has been busily putting together a young team of enthusiastic VSA members who have been involved with several successful events last year: VASSCAA-9, the Sydney Science Festival event “Invisible Forces”, an IUVSTA Executive Council Meeting, held at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, and our first three day Vacuum Course held at AINSE.
The VSA has secured significant funding from the New South Wales Government and is working closely with Business Events Sydney to bring a cracker of a meeting to Australia.
The bid document has recently been submitted to IUVSTA for potential selection. The first stage of the selection will be decided upon in the coming months with a brief presentation by Dr Stampfl in Regensburg at the end of March and then the final full set of presentations in Malmӧ before IVC-21.
We would be very grateful if you support our bid for Australia by showing this slide (IVC-23-bid) (which is a higher resolution version of the image above) at any suitable presentations.
